THANKS FOR TAKING THE WRITER'S TEST & FOR YOUR INTEREST IN EZGRIP PRODUCTS
The test is meant to be a self-help test to let
persons see how they and others use their writing instruments, the
habits most fall into, and how we hurt ourselves over the years just
doing this most basic thing.
Initially, women more than men, due to physiology, are more prone to
repetitive stress injuries. After the ages of 45/50 the playing
field is leveled and we are all susceptible. Writing instruments
promote finger-SQUEEZING. Three fingers squeezing while pushing
sideways promotes the wear and tear on finger joints destroying
the cushioning material between joints and throwing them out of
alignment. That's classic arthritis. Or, constant squeezing can
trigger muscles and tendons to cramp and lock up. Over the years
this can result in constant writer's cramp and focal hand Dystonia,
an involuntary cramping.
It is not the mere act of aging, as once thought, that causes
arthritis and other hand problems. It is the constant use of
instruments not fully designed to take advantage of the way our
fingers really work When writing instruments are squeezed, muscles,
tendons and nerves are engaged. These can run finger-tip to
neck/spine. Any of these can be irritated and ultimately cause
RSI's. The more writing we do the more opportunity for RSI's.
Most writing instruments do not require constant
over-squeezing for use. But, regardless of their modern designs, the
best ink supply, they do nothing to change pressures and generally
promote a tendency to squeeze.
TO ADDRESS YOUR WRITER'S TEST CONCERNS:
First - remember - we are not medical
professionals. This information is not a substitute for medical
advice.
We can only address problems as they relate to our products
We strongly recommend seeing your medical
professional - doctor, nurse, OT, PT - for evaluation. RSI's -
Repetitive Stress Injuries can deteriorate further.
This information is generalized and relates to a
variety of conditions such as Arthritis, Tendonitis, Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome, Writer's Cramp and some Focal Dystonia, etc -- Dystonia
varies widely so results have to be taken on an individual basis.--
THE SIMPLE SOLUTION:
It may be as simple as stating EzGrip products do not require
squeezing. They use only a single finger to exert downward pressure.
The other fingers hold loosely. If used as directed the
muscles/tendons relax -- they are not used as with normal writing
instruments -- and holding can become a non-issue. The wrist is not
engaged. The products are designed to be held loosely without
falling through the fingers -- as would happen with other products.
In fact, the EzGrip ResQ Gel pen can rest between the thumb and
first finger webbing of the hand. The first finger placed on the
comfort ledge for ever-so-slight downward writing pressure. (The
EzGrip ResQ Gel pen can actually write under its own light weight
without pressure.)
Here's the test for you.
Try this test for yourself to know if it affects your symptoms. Very
lightly, touch your first finger tip to a table surface -- or as if
touching a computer key. That's the way our products work. Only
that one finger is used for exerting downward writing pressure.
Does that trigger your symptoms? It does not take the normal
three-finger-squeeze-and-push-down method to write. The other
fingers only hold loosely and guide the pen. Unlike other writing
instruments, the grip shape allows the user to hold very lightly
without the pen falling out of the hand. When the pen is held up,
off the paper, it should be loose and be able to be wiggled
side-to-side. If this same thing were tried with other pens, they
would fall through the users fingers. The Ezgrip can be held that
lightly. The trick is to understand this and loosen up.
As we mentioned earlier, the EzGrip ResQ Gel pen can write under
it's very own weight - even without pressure applied. The barest
touch of the first finger, or thumb, or middle finger knuckle on the
comfort ledge ensures writing contact.
Muscle Memory:
We all have what's known as "muscle memory." Our muscles want to do
the thing they have always done - squeeze and push down when
writing. Using Ezgrip, the trick is to understand this is not
necessary and to loosen up. You can! It may take a little practice.
An extreme example of the pen’s capability, and the need to loosen up: A person with Polio -- deteriorated arm muscles, weak grasp, torn rotator cuff, and constant arm pain while writing -- can use the Ezgrip products easily and without pain. That is – once they learn to let the pen float in their fingers rather than squeeze them as they would normally do with conventional pens.
I hope these answers are a help.
